Elsewhere in Kiruna
Kiruna is the biggest town north of Luleå, at about 25,ooo people. It was founded in the late 1800's solely by workers who came to mine iron.
The LKAB mine in Kiruna is the largest underground iron mine in the world, operating currently at just over 1000m deep, and is mostly automated. Some mining equipment: An older, manual drilling machine.
Kiruna Church, voted Sweden's favourite building. It is wooden, and based on the pyramidical shape of traditional sami huts.
A great sunset was forming but we couldn't find a high enough vantage point to capture it, and we were rushing a bit to make the train back.
