Viking Kubb & BBQ
Last Sat were the final year student project talks, followed by a bbq. The weather was good, so we went a-grillning. We also played Kubb, which was at various times intriguingly called Viking Chess and Viking Rugby. Say what?
The game is Viking Kubb, and the chess analogy is much more accurate. Basically the idea is to throw a wooden club at the 6 blocks at each end, knocking them all down, before getting the king in the middle. If your block is knocked over you throw it to the other side, and must aim at it. I think that also then becomes the spot for the other team to attack from... various rules and complications were discussed. In the end, no-one was raped, pillaged, or smited, so it wasn't quite as viking-like as I expected.
