Roast beefcake. Literally.

I should have realised that after Hasse's doctoral defense, the invitation to cake at lunchtime didn't mean we'd be doing a Marie Antionnette and eating black forest cake for lunch. No, it was smörgås-cake (smörgåstorta), which would literally translate as "sandwich-cake".

The difference between a cocktail and a shrimp cocktail is something like the difference between a cake and a
smörgåstorta. It is some sort of sponge (Ed. note: actually it is bread) with fresh cream /mayonnaise filling, and decorated on top with more cream and usually a mixture of prawns and salad. This one was a roastbeef version: yes, we were literally eating beef-cake.

Not being a huge fan of anything smothered in cream/mayo, I actually avoided eating these things for my first year here, but eventually braved it and was surprised to find it wasn't half bad. Still, given a choice, I would rather load up on sugar via eclairs and custard tarts.
